As Geospatial Research Centre NZ Ltd (GRC) approaches the end of its third year of operations, the Shareholders and Board of Directors have completed an extensive internal review of the company and identified a strategy for the immediate future.
The company explicitly recognises the current global recession and its severe, and ongoing, impact on global contract R&D expenditure, as well as the difficulties inherent in launching novel products and services on a global scale from within New Zealand.
The very real benefits of continuing to support commercially focused inter-disciplinary R&D at undergraduate, masters and particularly PhD levels have also been clearly recognised.
A decision has therefore been taken to reduce commercial operations within the company over the next three months whilst launching an explicitly academic Geospatial Research Centre to be hosted within the University of Canterbury’s College of Engineering. This centre will be based in NZi3, the national ICT Innovation Institute based at the University.
A range of GRC R&D and commercial aerial mapping operations will continue to be available via the current Geospatial Research Centre, the proposed Geospatial Academic Research Centre, and potentially a range of externally linked spin out companies.
